One of the things that I found out while I was working out was that the sports bras that were available at the big box stores just didn’t do the job for my “fuller” figure. They didn’t offer NEAR enough control. The bouncing HURT.

How to Find the Perfect Fit for You

When trying this product on to check if it fits, here are some tips that I found useful.

-          Make sure that the band is a bit tighter fitting than a regular cotton or lingerie bra. Try to take a deep breath while wearing it and see if you can do so without any discomfort. Also, try moving a bit and observe if the band rides up your back. If it does, adjust the straps or the hook.

-          When you are trying this one, check the fabric of the cups. There shouldn’t be any wrinkles or bumps because these normally indicate that the bra is too loose. Also, make sure that your breasts are completely contained by the cups.

-          The strap should be comfortable. So if it’s digging in to your shoulders or sliding down, you need to make some adjustments.

One of the first things I figured out when I started running was that I needed a better bra to run in.  This became evident to me right away…  particularly because I am fairly big breasted.  I just couldn’t control the bounce with the typical $10 bra from Target or Walmart and I needed something that actually worked!

So I started doing research, and what I found was that not all sport bras are created equal… Some work really well, and some… don’t.    Through all of this I came up with some guidelines to help me pick out the right sports bra.  These work every time.

By taking action on the following tips, you will

• Protect your figure during exercise (no prematurely sagging boobies for you!)
• Feel more comfortable and eliminate the painful bouncing.
  
• Get a sports bra that actually fits and does its job correctly!

Tip #1:  When It Comes To Sports Bras Construction Counts!

I cannot tell you how tiring it is to try on bra after bra at the major big box stores – do a jump test, and find out that NONE of them pass.  It is because of how they are constructed.

Most of the bras that you find at Target, Walmart, or K-mart should not be allowed to bear the sports bra label at all.  They are good for sleeping in, but not for doing any kind of high impact activity.

The reason?  Construction.

Most of these garments are what are called compression bras.  Compression is actually used in all sports bras, even the ones that work.  It simply means that they compress your breasts against your body in order to provide some control.

The problem is that if you are a B cup or bigger compression alone simply does not give you enough support to keep the delicate ligaments that hold your breasts up supported and protected.

So what kind of construction actually works?

The type of construction that actually works in a sports bra is what is called “encapsulation and compression” .   Basically what that means is that the garment is constructed to separate your breasts AND compress them.   Two good examples of this technology are found in the Enell and the Moving Comfort.

These bras are constructed to minimize the “figure 8″ movement that happens when you are working out.   When you are looking for a bra that is constructed this way look for separate cups within the construction.   Sometimes this construction is obvious like with the Enell (above, left), and sometimes it is hidden like in the Moving Comfort bra (right).

In the case of hidden encapsulation construction, you can turn the bra inside out and it should have cups in it.  If it doesn’t… it will probably not offer enough support.

Tip #2:  If It Is Not Comfortable You Won’t Wear It.

The whole point of wearing a sports bra is to protect your breasts and eliminate the pain and injury that bouncing can cause.  That is why it is so important that the sports bra you get feels comfortable.

Thankfully, manufacturers have really been paying attention to issues of comfort lately.  Here are a few of my favorite features that will really increase your level of comfort.

• Adjustable straps – we don’t all have the same body shapes so why should our straps all be the same.
• Front and/or back closures – much easier to get on and off then the pullover kind.
• Moisture wicking fabric – keeps chafing to a minimum
• Wide straps – no shoulder marks.

Personally, I like my sports bras to have all of these characteristics.   I just think these features make for a more comfortable bra.

How To Find a Comfortable Sports Bra.

There are two places to find a comfortable bra that works well.  You need to go to a specialty sporting goods store, or look online.

If you are going to a store be sure to try on the bras and then jump up and down a bit.  They should offer good support and NOT chafe.  If they don’t feel right, keep trying until you get one that does.

If you are shopping online, then you will want to look at the customer reviews.  One of my personal favorite places for this is at Amazon.com.  For instance you can read over 10o reviews on the Moving Comfort Fiona (which is Moving Comfort’s best selling style) at Amazon.

The customer reviews will give you far more information about the bras then the product description does.  It is always a good idea to check them out.

Tip #3:  Know Your Bra Size.

Most quality sports bras are now sized to standard bra sizes, and are no longer simply small, medium, and large (thank goodness), but that means to get the right fit, you need to know your true bra size.

How to Know If You Are Wearing The Right Bra Size.

You will know that you are wearing the correct size bra if your regular bra covers your breasts with no spill over at the top and no bagginess.  If you have spillover, back rolls, or bagginess you are probably not in the right size cup, or the right size band.  If this is the case then you need to find your true bra size before your order your sports bra.

Getting the right sports bra is super important.  If you focus on quality construction, comfort, and fit then you will find that getting the right sports bra becomes easy, and working out becomes a lot more fun.

Mega pop star, and the woman everyone seems to be talking about, Rihanna, was recently spotted at the airport wearing a cotton designer sports bra over an open blazer and pants, showing off her well toned mid drift. We all know Rihanna has a busy schedule in between constant shows and tours; but she should really schedule her exercise time for when she is not on a plane.

Lindsay Lohan, the troubled actress and singer, was recently spotted working out wearing a sports bra and boxing gloves with full length pants to hide her alcohol monitoring bracelet. She revealed on twitter that she pretended the trainers’ pads she was furiously attacking were the bothersome paparazzi. Fortunately photographers were able to snap pictures from a safe distance, as Lindsay proves that she is doing everything she can to be fit for her big comeback, whenever that may be.

Celebrities have recently made a push on advocating sports bras, due to the fact that many women do not wear them, or are wearing ill-fitted models. Some women seem to be unaware of the consequences of using a normal bra, and have developed several myths over time regarding the female breasts. These include the notion that there is muscle in the breast. This is not true at all, as they are composed of fat and tissue, and are supported by a delicate ligament. Too much movement causes this ligament to stretch, the result being sagging and painful breasts. Once these breasts begin to sag, it’s too late to turn back this effect except for the option of plastic surgery.

Anna Kournikova is one of the worlds’ most famous tennis stars, known for her beauty and fabulously toned body. Her name is probably the only Russian word almost every American can spell, as Google searches for her pictures are one of the most frequently conducted search strings. She has been a major advocate for women wearing sports bras, and has led several campaigns to get women to ensure against the unwanted effects of not wearing running sports bras. She had a specially modeled bra by ShockAbsorber, which was later released in a special limited line edition.

Oprah Winfrey was one of the key factors in the fame and popularity of the Enell Sports Bra, when designer Renelle Braaten convinced her to review the bra. The subsequent positive review and Renelle’s appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show made her bra famous throughout America. Enell bras are mostly for ‘well endowed’ women. It’s common knowledge that exercising and large breasts do not go well together. This is a problem faced by not only the naturally blessed, but the many silicone laden women, both celebrities and adult performers, who often face embarrassing results in their attempts to maintain their figures.

The Enell bra is most famously advocated by 36DDD Petra Verkaik, a nude model who is the most published model in Playboy. She claims that with this firm support bra she can do any activity she wants, including taxing exercises which involve bouncing and jumping; which have the most strenuous effects on the breasts and back.

Eva Longoria Parker, the glamorous star of the TV show Desperate Housewives, wears a Champion sports bra in order to maintain the figure that prompted several critics to humorously nickname the show ‘Desperately Skinny Housewives’. Whatever she is using; it seems to be working, as she claims she does a wide variety of different workout routines.

Moving Comfort bras, a major rival of Champion and Enell,  manages to compete with a competitive price, as many women (the ones not paid to write glowing reviews) find the bra to be good quality and well priced. Sometimes, however, having the right bra just may not be enough. Several celebrities opt to go for reduction surgery to get rid of what they feel to be irritatingly large breasts.

Numerous studies have been conducted which prove the effectiveness of sports bras verses normal bras. While a normal bra can reduce movement by around 38%, a proper well adjusted brassier can reduce movement by as much as 74%. But despite all these studies, and endorsements from many popular celebrities; around three fourths of woman who exercise regularly do not use running sports bras. Another study found that at least half of the women questioned experienced pain when exercising or jogging. The reasons are varied, but most women don’t understand fully what is going on, or simply ignore the problem.

Others have problems finding a perfectly fitting bra. This is because breasts are unique in shape; therefore, it is sometimes necessary to get a custom made bra that can accommodate width and length. Back size is another variable, and most sports bras do not have adjustable straps, which may make create the need for a customizable bra.

Famous singer and star of the Disney sitcom and movie Hannah Montana, is one of these. She was recently photographed with her boyfriend Justin Gaston during a jog. She didn’t bother to wear a sports bra, but instead wore a low-cut shirt with a bikini top underneath, coupled with what appeared to be cut off jean shorts. She seemed to enjoy the attention along with her bare-chested boyfriend; in sheer contrast to the aggressive pounding Lindsay would have delivered to the photographers should they have gotten any closer.

#1.  Hanes Sport Stretchy Cotton Sports Bra

This bra is a traditional pullover type of sports bra.  It has pretty shirring in the front making it more feminine than the popular Fruit of the Loom Sports Bra, and support pretty well.

How does it work for high impact sports?

For most women this bra will not be adequate for high impact sports.  It is a not supportive enough.  Most of the time you need a bra with some serious internal engineering, and this bra does not have that.

My favorite high impact bra is the Moving Comfort Bra.

There is a trick that I have learned that will make this work if you want to run in it.  And that is to wear one of your normal bras under the sports bra.  I’ve done this many times when my more expensive bras have all been dirty and in the wash and it works great in a pinch.

What activities is this sports bra good for?

1. Great for moderate and low impact activities – like weight lifting, eliptical, walking, and yoga.
2. Excellent sleep bra.
3. Works well as a nursing bra (nursing pads fit great and you can just lift up the bottom of the bra to nurse).
4. Lot’s of women wear this as their everyday bra.

Any downsides to this bra?

This bra tends to run a little small and shrink a bit in the wash, so be sure to order one size up from your normal band size to get the proper fit.

What care does it need?

You can simply drop this in your washing machine and then tumble dry.  It is easy to care for which is a huge plus.

#2. Hanes Full Figure Sports Bra

This is Hane’s offering for those of us with fuller cup sizes.   In the case of sports bras, full figure generally means C cup and up.

This bra features a back closure (if you are larger chested than you KNOW how important that is) as well as fabric without a lot of “give”, which helps to support your bust better.

How does it work for high impact sports?

I personally would not run in this bra, unless I was “doubling up” and wearing a regular underwire bra under it.  This is not my favorite way to go, but it works well in a pinch.

For the best high impact control for fuller figures I always recommend the Enell sports bra.

What activities does it work well for?

1. Low to mid impact exercises, such as yoga, cycling, and walking
2. Some women like this bra for everyday wear.  It is supportive.

What special features does it have?

• Moisture wicking fabric
• Non stretch molded cups
• Back  closure

Any downsides?

Unlike the stretchy bra, this bra fits true to size, so that is not an issue.  The only real problem I could find with this bra is that it is not supportive enough for super high impact activities.  Otherwise it is a great bra for the price.

This is where the bottom band of the sports bra typically rests. Make sure that the measuring tape lies flat and a bit snug against your skin. Add 5 inches to the results of the measurement. If it is even then that is your band size. If it is an odd number add 1 inch.

After you determine your band size, find out what your sports bra cup size is. Wrap the same measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust and take the measurement and subtract it from your band size. If the difference between the two numbers is 1 inch, then you are cup A. If it is 2 then you are a B cup and 3 inches equals a C cup. If you get 4 inches then obviously you get D cup.

Next, determine what type of sports bra you actually need. If you wear an A or B cup, it means you need adequate support with a compression sports bra that presses the bra close to the chest wall and restricts bouncing.
